The Document International Human Rights Film Festival - Our Doc's Scottish Premiere!

A Brilliant Genocide's Scottish Premiere

A Brilliant Genocide
This is the untold story of how an African dictator has been able to commit mass murder and still get a regular audience at The White House and 10 Downing Street. A Brilliant Genocide is a political expose and human rights documentary that details the untold story of suffering and an unrecognized genocide against the Acholi people of northern Uganda by the current Government, under President Yoweri Museveni, who has for decades been staunch ally to the west. But has the West been hoodwinked by this deceptive devil in disguise, the face of democracy in Africa, the US’s strongest ally in the region and who Clinton once called “a beacon of hope on the African continent”, or have they turned a blind eye and knowingly been dancing with the devil for their own selfish and strategic interests?

ONE WORLD ARTICLE: Uganda government accused of 'the perfect crime'

Uganda government accused of 'the perfect crime'

3rd October 2016, from Daniel Nelson

A documentary accusing President Museveni and the Uganda army of genocide against the Acholi people in the north is being used to lobby for an end to US aid to Uganda.

A Brilliant Genocide argues that Museveni exploited atrocities by a rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), as a cover for his own “reign of terror” against the Acholis.
The film’s website carries a petition asking the US President to cut arms supplies and non-humanitarian aid, to ensure Museveni and others face justice, and to use sanctions and diplomacy to force the Uganda government to compensate victims of army violence.

After a film festival screening in London last Friday, Olara Otunnu, a Uganda politician, diplomat and former UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, insisted that Acholi culture and civilisation faced “existential annihilation.

“We must address how to resuscitate [this culture] gather the pieces – a Marshall Plan is not big enough for Acholiland today,” he said.

The crisis had been written about and been the subject of reports, but all had been “studiously ignored and brushed under the carpet”.

Director Ebony Butler has said that she started making a film about Joseph Kony, the LRA and the use of child soldiers in 2009 but “along our six-year journey we found some completely untold ‘hidden’ stories that we felt were even more important to bring to light …”

Those responsible for these massive human rights abuses were still in office today, she has written, and continue to enjoy “complete impunity for their crimes”.

Why the title? As an interviewee in the film says: “No food, no hydration, sexual violence from the soldiers who were meant to protect them. That’s why this was a ‘brilliant genocide’ – a silent genocide: perfect crime.”

-Daniel Nelson

Nodding Disease in Northern Uganda

I was recently in Northern Uganda (Odek) where I spent some time with the victims of Nodding Disease, and their parents / guardians or only surviving family members. It was a period, and experience in my life I will always hold close to my heart, and could never forget. The faces of these children still haunt me to this day. I hope through my work with children around the world sick or not, that I have been able to make them smile, cheer them up, make them giggle and laugh through their suffering… But this was a different story altogether. The suffering, the pain, the anguish and isolation of these poor, sick and neglected people, is a sad story that has its roots buried far beyond the first outbreak of Nodding Disease.

This young boy has been severely disfigured by Nodding Disease. He is 12 years old yet looks about 6, he cannot speak and he is the last surviving son in his family. 4 died of Nodding Disease and one was abducted by the LRA and has never returned. His father does not know if he is dead or alive.

The sad truth is that the government of Uganda does not really care about the poor young Acholi children in the North who are suffering, then dying of this shocking Nodding disease. When I was in Uganda a couple of months ago, there was so much local media showing President Museveni out in health clinics and setting up facilities for nodding disease victims and so forth. That was while I was in the same country. Actually! During my time in Northern Uganda; the President just flew in for many media opportunities. Speaking about these issues, I would say I have spent more time in Northern Uganda than the President himself. I would have spent more time on Acholi soil, speaking Acholi (a little, but a little more than President Museveni), working with them; learning; sharing; caring; teaching; drinking; eating; laughing; living; crying with them… and establishing life-long friends with them! Oh, my heart goes out to my dear Acholi friends from the North!

The Case for Justice - ICTJ Documentary

Check out this insightful, though provoking and wonderfully crafted documentary: 'The Case for Justice'. The documentary explores transitional justice mechanisms and the significance of social and political justice to ensure sustainable and long-lasting peace in post conflict countries that are transitioning from dictatorship to democracy. It centers on the importance of truth telling, reparation, reconciliation and dignity of the victims, claiming that these elements are vital for sustainable democracy, development, security and peace. It argues that oppressors and violators of human rights must be held accountable for their actions in the past or in the present, as victims need the truth to be able to heal from trauma associated with victimization, violence, suffering and other forms of injustice and repression inflicted on them and their families.

Why pursue transitional justice in the aftermath of massive human rights violations? "The Case for Justice" provides a window into the debate about the relevance of transitional justice in today's world.

The complexity of this debate is best illustrated by the different myths that abound within it. Some contend transitional justice is "soft justice," an alternative to pursuing criminal justice in the wake of mass atrocities or repression; others equate it solely with criminal trials, fully focused on perpetrators. Some view it as a key obstacle to reaching successful peace agreements; others regard it as a kind of a magic wand, a quick cure for the scars of war and abuse.

In fact, the field of transitional justice recognizes that without accountability for massive human rights abuses, societies have little hope of avoiding the recurrence of conflict or building sustainable peace.

Film Crew back from Uganda

Our crew have spent the last 7 weeks away filming on location in Uganda. Our documentary Child Troopers (working title) has come a long way in 3 years and has also developed into a much more socially significant and politically charged film, focusing on sensitive, historic and contemporary issues that affect Uganda yet are being largely ignored by international media, which hinders the path to peace and justice in the region.

International Crisis Group : Elements of a New Strategy to Disarm the LRA

There has been a lot of talk in 2010 with the LRA Disarmament Act being introduced into Congress, then the historical moment when the legislation was enacted by President Obama. Things were sounding good, and hopefully they still are good, but from afar, there seems to be little effective action taking place.

There has been the release of the 'Comprehensive Strategy', which really only outlined what one would do to help LRA affected people...
